Remote Access FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Note that Remote Access may be abbreviated as RA in many of the answers.
Connectivity
- What is Remote Access?
A system for digitally uploading files to The Brandt Company, including automatic preflight, PDF proof & on-line approval for print production.
- Is a high-speed Internet connection required?
Technically most any speed Internet connection can work, but due to typical file sizes being uploaded, a high speed Internet connection is recommended.
- What browsers are approved?
Windows: Internet Explorer 6 or newer (7 preferred) or Firefox 2 or higher
Mac: Safari 3 or Firefox 2 or higher
- I checked the browser info on the login page, no detail is given, a failed status occurs, or I get an error on the login page that Java is not installed?
Java/JavaScript must be installed and enabled to use RA. A minimum of v1.4.2 is required. We recommend using the latest version available.
- Is guest access to RA allowed?
A RA account must be set up by BrandtCo for login access to the RA system. Contact your Sales Consultant to complete this process.
Productivity
- What file formats can be uploaded to RA?
PDF or PS files are compatible
- Can application files be uploaded?
Application/source files are not eligible for automated processing through RA at this time.
- I am a new user, are there any tips or instruction sheets for using RA?
You can find quick tips on our website www.brandtco.com/remote_access_02.shtml, and click the Quick Tips link to download the PDF file. From RA, go to the Download tab to access the file.
- Why do I need to create a job with RA, I never had to do this with FTP?
When using RA, you are activating work within The Brandt Company. Creating the job allows all the components of the uploaded job to be stored together in that job’s workspace.
- My job is quite large, is there a limit on how big or how many pages can be uploaded?
You can upload single files with dozens of pages
- The preflight reports are somewhat intimidating… do I have to read everything?
You should always review the preflight reports. Pay particular attention for any alerts ( ! ) & warnings ( X ). If you have specific questions, contact @brandtco.com for assistance.
- My image graphics will still print okay at less than 300dpi, won’t they?
300dpi resolution is a print-wide standard for image resolution and is meant as a guideline. When image resolution is less than the recommended minimum of 1.5 times the screen frequency (lines per inch, or lpi), inferior quality may result. For example, when printing at 200 lpi, the recommended minimum would be 300dpi. See the auto-generated RA Preflight reports for information regarding image resolution.
- What if I don’t have 300dpi res images available for use in the job?
It is possible for images supplied with less dpi than recommended to yield acceptable results. It is recommended to approach approving jobs with low resolution (less than 250dpi for example) very carefully, and remember that your approval directs us to proceed with printing the project! See your Preflight report for image information, and your Sales Consultant with questions or concerns.
- My job prints 4-color process, the Preflight shows extra colors?
If colors need to be converted to process, this can be done when creating your PDF file. If directed, BrandtCo can perform this feature on files already uploaded to RA. This info can be communicated via email directly to your CSR, or comments added in the PDF approval, prior to sending it in.
- My job prints 2-color spot, the Preflight shows CMYK colors?
This problem is recommended to be fixed in the application file and not at PDF approval. You could authorize Brandt Co to fix this for you, but that would be at Author’s Alteration charge rates.
- My job prints 4-color process for the cover and 2-color spot for the text?
The preflight report breaks out information detail by the page. The report will offer feedback on which pages are set up as spot or process colors.
